What will I need?

There are a few items that all pilots will need.  Then there are some items you want to wait until you learn more about your flying habits before you buy.  I'll go through a short list of what every future pilot will want and I'll list where I have found them the cheapest and let you do the rest of the research.

1)  A spiral notebook with pockets to store hand-outs from class and articles you'll find (Wal-Mart)

2)  A flight bag - Even though I have a hard-sided flight case, I've found for most a soft-sided gym bag works great, if it's not full it doesn't take up as much space.  It needs to be big enough to store all of your flight gear.  This way, each time you come to the airport, simply pick up the flight bag and you'll have everything you need.  (Wal-Mart) (no, I don't own stock)

3)  A few "ultra fine" pens (either roller or gel) for making precision marks.  And some "ever-sharp" pencils with extra lead.  I prefer both .3 and .5 mm lead sizes. (office supply store)

The other items are generally only found in flight supply catalogs so we have these in stock at the airport.  We keep our prices the same as the major catalogs and you save shipping.  These items include:

4)  Private Pilot text book

5)  Federal Aviation Regulations and Airman's Information Manual (FAR / AIM)

6)  Gleim Written Test booklet. (I recommend these above the others that are out there)

7)  Practical Test Standards (PTS) shows all of the items covered on the Practical Test.

8)  Rotational Azimuth Plotter for use on establishing cross-country flights.

9)  E6B Flight Computer is a circular slide rule for easily calculating.

10) Nav-logs for logging navigational information on flights of more than 25 nautical miles.

11) St. Louis Sectional chart is a road map for pilots including important navigational information.

In addition to this, we will provide Airport Facility Directories that have recently gone out-of-date for you to use at no charge.  Before your check-ride you will need to get a current one.  We will also provide a syllabus at no charge.  This helps us get the most out of each flight and helps us understand areas where you are strong (and no so strong)
